That blazing summer afternoon in 1986, in Mexico City, the laws of the universe seemed to stop applying. Space, time, velocity, gravity — all stood in wonder as Diego Armando Maradona bent the game to his will.
First, he outsmarted gravity with a flash of audacity. Minutes later, he defied it altogether, leaving England’s defenders in his wake on an 11-second, 60-yard run that would become the Goal of the Century.
He defined gravitas and defied gravity all at once. Flawed, and never pretending otherwise, Diego had a gravitational pull on millions that went far beyond football.
Some forces cannot be explained. Some legends cannot be repeated.
Diego was one of them.
