Before the academies, the investment, and the next generation of talent, there was the Oval.

For me, Met Oval was more than a soccer field. It was part of growing up in New York. My earliest memories go back to watching my older brother play. Before long, my own Saturdays and Sundays belonged to the game.

There was far more sand than grass, muddy patches and puddles after the rain, and goals backed by the kind of chain-link fencing you’d find in someone’s backyard. With the New York City skyline in the background, it was our little corner of the football world. And we loved every minute of it.

From my earliest days with the German-Hungarian Metros (GH Metros) to playing for New York Serbia and Queens United, the Oval was a constant in my footballing journey. Memorial Day tournaments, weekend matches, practices, teammates, rivalries, and friendships. So many memories made on a patch of ground that meant so much to so many.

Built in 1925, Metropolitan Oval has been part of New York soccer for generations. Long before the game enjoyed the attention it receives today, the Oval gave young players from different neighborhoods, backgrounds, and communities a place to play, compete, and belong.

And that’s what makes this place special. Every generation has its own stories. Different teams, different faces, different eras, but a shared connection to that little corner of Queens where so many fell in love with the game.

The field has changed, and new generations are creating memories of their own. But the spirit of the Oval lives on in everyone who has called it their football home.

For those who grew up playing on the sand, those who play there today, and those who have yet to step onto the field, this one’s for you.
